Cricket St Thomas Golf Club was experiencing rising energy costs following the upgrade of its kitchen facilities to more electricity-dependent equipment. To reduce operating costs, improve energy efficiency, and protect against future electricity price increases, the club invested in a commercial solar PV system designed to maximise on-site renewable energy generation.
Our team designed and installed a 46.4 kWp SolarEdge PV system across both trapezoidal and flat roof areas, providing a long-term solution to rising energy consumption.
The Challenge
Following the installation of new electric kitchen equipment, the golf club's electricity demand increased significantly, leading to higher energy bills and greater reliance on grid-supplied electricity.
The club required a solution that would:
After conducting a detailed site survey and system design, we installed a 46.4 kWp solar PV system comprising 101 JA Solar JAM54D-40-450-LB-TSLC-MC4 photovoltaic panels.
41 solar panels were installed on the trapezoidal roof using the Renusol 920008 M10x200 Timber Hanger Bolt. We used this system rather than the conventional REN-420402 Landscape Trapezoidal Mount because the fixing screws would be visible from below. This mounting solution provided a secure and efficient installation while maximising the available roof area.

A further 60 solar panels were installed on the flat roof using the K2 Dome ballast mounting system. The non-penetrative design ensured roof integrity while achieving optimal panel positioning for energy generation.

To maximise system performance, on the flat roof each panel was connected to SolarEdge power optimiser and on the trapezoidal roof, two panels were connected to one optimiser. This allows panel-level monitoring and improved energy yield.
The system was connected to:
This configuration provides efficient power conversion, enhanced monitoring capabilities, and optimised performance across the entire array.

While the installation was straightforward from a technical perspective, we encountered an aesthetic challenge on the trapezoidal roof section.
The Renusol 920008 M10x200 Timber Hanger Bolt system creates a relatively large gap between the roof sheet and the underside of the solar panels. Whilst this provides suitable ventilation for panel performance, it also meant that the wiring and mounting components were visible from ground level.
As a company, we take pride not only in the performance of our installations but also in their appearance. Although the cabling was installed neatly and in accordance with industry best practices, we felt the finished aesthetic could be improved.
To overcome this, we designed and commissioned bespoke solar skirts specifically for this project. These custom-fabricated skirts were installed around the perimeter of the array to conceal the cabling and mounting components while maintaining the necessary airflow beneath the panels.
The result was a cleaner, more professional appearance without compromising ventilation, system performance, or maintenance accessibility. This additional attention to detail ensured the final installation met both our technical standards and the client's expectations.

The completed system now generates a substantial proportion of the golf club's electricity requirements on-site, helping to offset the increased energy demand created by the upgraded kitchen facilities.
Key Performance Metrics
By generating clean renewable electricity on-site, Cricket St Thomas Golf Club is expected to reduce its carbon emissions by approximately 9.18 tonnes every year.
This reduction supports the club's sustainability objectives while demonstrating its commitment to responsible environmental stewardship.
The Cricket St Thomas Golf Club solar installation showcases how commercial organisations can effectively manage rising energy costs while improving sustainability. Through the installation of a 46.4 kWp SolarEdge solar PV system across multiple roof types, the club now benefits from lower electricity costs, reduced carbon emissions, and a projected payback period of just 4.6 years.
With an estimated annual generation of 47,460 kWh, the system will continue delivering financial and environmental benefits for many years to come.
